Violin by Domenicus Montagnana Venice 1734
Two pieces of wood had been inserted into the upper bass rib of this violin that did not match the wood of the original rib. One of these two pieces had started to crack at the transition to the upper block. The instrument was opened up, the two pieces were removed, and replaced with a single piece of new wood that better fit the original rib. After retouching the new piece, the restoration work was almost invisible.
